Questions You Need to Ask When Hiring a Gutter Installer

Gutters play a vital role in diverting water runoff away from your roof and into the floor drain. If you want to maximize your gutter replacement, it’s important to know what you’re getting at when looking for a gutter and roof replacement contractor. Make sure to ask the following questions:

“How Do You Fasten the Gutters?”

Depending on the roof, there are two methods on how contractors install gutters. The first method uses nails; they go through the outside of the gutter and pass through the inside so they can attach to the fascia board and rafter. This isn’t always reliable because the nails may pull out over time due to the weight of the water in the gutter. This also causes it to sag and eventually fall off.

The other method uses screws, which are more reliable because they don’t pull out over time and don’t corrode. Make sure to clarify with the roof installation contractor on what type of screws they use; they should be the “long-form” ones that are over 2 ½ inches for a secure and firm hold.

“Are Your Installers Full-Time Employees or Subcontractors?”

When they say that they use subcontractors, it means they hire someone else to do the installation. Their workmanship may not be up to standard, which can be problematic later on after installation. As much as possible, make sure your gutters are installed by contractors who use full-time employees so that you know who’s fully responsible for the job. This will also ensure quality workmanship since full-time employees are more committed to their line of work than part-time laborers.

“How Long Will the Installation Take?”

The installation job should only take around two days. The old gutters will be removed and hauled away on the first day, while the installation of the new gutters will be completed on the second day. Keep in mind that this is done in ideal weather conditions, which is typical during the spring season.
